Beyond the Job
I've been meaning to post this blog of being a Resident Assistant. I guess this is the right time which I can finally complete what's been hindering me to post this blog.
What is a Resident Assistant?
1. A resident assistant is the meaning of the acronym RA when you're inside the Freshie Dorm, Kalayaan Residence Hall of UP Diliman. But when you're outside this dorm, it may mean a research assistant or a registration assistant (during enrolment periods in UP). They stay at the RA counter. They use the paging system to call a resident whenever they have visitors. They post announcement, conduct CA, GA, GI and bechecks. They see to it that all the resident's records are complete.
2. A resident assistant is only heard in Kalai because other dorms have SA (student assistant).
3. A resident assistant is someone a freshie calls "ate" or "kuya" who can be your friend, confidante, coach, mentor, teacher, classmate, coursemate. He/She is everyone to the residents. In short, develops a brother/sister relationship with the residents.
4. A resident assistant is a role model. dapat maganda, matangkad, makinis. LOL. Kidding aside, he/she has good moral values and exhibits good character. That is why resident assistants are screened very well.
5. All resident assistants have different personalities, lahat naman e. They have different field of expertise/interest. So, residents can learn from them and can be holistic but not all fields the RAs can provide.
What is being an RA?
1. Being an RA requires time - much free time. Free time not only for 12hrs/wk of counter duty but also for lots of time for the residents. It does not require your 24/7 time but it does require making time for everyone.
2. It requires willingness to work, to learn from work and learn from the residents.
3. Being an RA means being a good listener and has a teachable heart. It means as much as you are the teacher, you are also a student. The RA and the residents must both grow together.
4. Being an RA means having authority, without abusig it.
5. Being an RA requires patience, much patience.
6. Being an RA requires confidence and discipline.
7. An RA must have discernment and must withhold judgment from one side of the story.
8. They seek the good for their residents. They see the good in their residents.
9. Being an RA requires a heart for every resident he/she will handle - corridor, committee or club.
10. Above all, being an RA requires joy to work for and with the residents.
what are the benefits of an RA?
1. Free board and lodging, tuition fee discount and a monthly allowance.
2. Lots of friends, instant but long-lasting.
3. Residents who are considered as the RA's younger siblings, if not, children or "anak".
4. Fun activities and events.
5. Learnings from other RAs and residents.
6. Worth-remembering moments.
7. Extraordinary and extraspecial academic year.
How I love being called "ate Love" by these wonderful and brilliant people, not to mention beautiful and handsome too. How I love hearing our residents in Kalai expressing their interests to become a resident assistant. How I'll miss them and gets extra emotional whenever I browse past photos or whenever they remember to PM or text me. How my heart jumps hearing them happy and achieving things they dream of.
Beyond the job we were tasked from the very beginning, being an RA is a CALLING and the residents are the overflowing GIFTS. I thank God for knowing them. I most especially thank my gorgeous Centre de Femme (2nd floor centerfold) girls for giving me a great start, Basement Boys (BB)for their undying support - both comprises the PURPLE RAPTORS, the persevering Food Committee Heads for just being the best committee, the talented INDAK-KALAI for sharing the passion, my pretty MariONEa (1st floor) girls, for the awesome end and for my beloved co-RAs, for everything we shared - happy and sad. Lastly, I thank the Dr. and the DM for challenging us and believing in us. Our batch of RA may not be the best but believe me, I saw the dedication of every co-RA of mine.
Each step of the way was a learning experience. It was beautiful, sharing it with all of these people. I will miss and will always remember everything. This has really been a part of me. I can only see everyone's happy faces.
